About
Jen Muggleton is a Research Professor in the Dynamics Group at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR), part of the School of Engineering at the University of Southampton. Her research focuses on wave propagation in pipes and ground, emphasizing leak detection and buried infrastructure location. She collaborates with UK Water Industry Research (UKWIR) on their 'Zero Leakage 2050' initiative and explores optical fibre technology for pipeline monitoring.
Educations:
- BSc (Eng) in Aeronautical Engineering from Imperial College, London (1985)
- PhD in Acoustic Power Flow from ISVR, University of Southampton (1992)
- MA and ACGI qualifications
Research Interests:
Muggleton's work spans acoustic leak detection, vibration analysis of fluid-filled pipes, and the application of vibroacoustic techniques to detect buried infrastructure. She also investigates automotive tyre vibration and structural dynamics. Her research integrates advanced methods like wavelet-based analysis and distributed sensing to enhance pipeline monitoring accuracy and efficiency.
Research Projects:
- RAINDROP: Transforming Acoustic Sensing for Leak Detection in Trunk Mains and Distribution Pipelines (EPSRC-funded)
- Fibre Optic Leak Detection of Oil and Gas Pipelines (Sponsored by Schlumberger)
- Mapping the Underworld series: Multi-sensor approaches for buried asset detection (EPSRC-funded)
Advising & Grants:
Muggleton currently supervises eight PhD students across Engineering and Environmental disciplines. Her grants include collaborations through EPSRC and UKWIR, focusing on leak detection technologies and infrastructure monitoring. She has led major projects like the vibroacoustic component of 'Mapping the Underworld' (2004–2018).
Labs & Teams:
She is affiliated with the ISVR and the Dynamics Group, leveraging interdisciplinary expertise in acoustics, vibration, and structural engineering to advance her research.
