Jeffrey R. Greenwald, MD is a faculty member in the Department of Pediatrics at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences School of Medicine and serves as Director of the Well Newborn Service at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland. A retired U.S. Navy officer (2006), he has held successive leadership roles in military neonatology and pediatric education since 1990.
Education:
- B.S. Chemistry, Muhlenberg College, 1979
- M.D. Jefferson Medical College, 1983
- Pediatric Residency, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital
- Neonatal-Perinatal Fellowship, St. Peters Medical Center
Research Interests: Dr Greenwald’s academic focus centers on clinical neonatology, perinatal epidemiology, and high-frequency ventilation strategies. His work has explored surfactant pharmacology, intrauterine growth standards for military populations, and uncommon neonatal presentations such as hemorrhoids or viral endocrinopathies, reflecting a broad interest in both common and rare conditions affecting newborns.
Publication Trends: Across three decades his peer-reviewed output illustrates sustained inquiry into respiratory support (high-frequency ventilation, surfactant), neonatal sepsis diagnostics, and population-based growth data within military hospitals. Recent case reports highlight unusual influenza-related cardiac failure and coxsackie virus endocrine sequelae, showing an evolving emphasis on infectious–maternal determinants of neonatal disease.
Military & Scientific Awards: Among multiple unit and individual decorations he received the Meritorious Service Medal (2006), Navy Commendation Medals (1998, 2000), Achievement Medals, and repeated Meritorious Unit Commendations spanning 1991-2008.
Leadership & Grants: He has directed newborn services at National Naval Medical Center/Walter Reed since 2006, previously led pediatrics departments, and served as Associate Program Director for the National Capital Consortium Pediatric Residency, guiding curriculum and trainee research without specific grant detail disclosed.
Labs & Teams: While no standalone laboratory is cited, his directorship of the Well Newborn Service implies oversight of multidisciplinary nursing, respiratory therapy, and resident teams delivering level-II neonatal care within the military medical center.
