About
Jeffrey Moffitt is an Assistant Professor of Microbiology at Harvard Medical School and an Investigator in the Program in Cellular and Molecular Medicine (PCMM) at Boston Children's Hospital. His research focuses on developing next-generation image-based approaches for single-cell 'omics to explore host-microbe interactions and tissue organization.
Dr. Moffitt earned his PhD in Physics from the University of California, Berkeley, where he pioneered methods for tracking Angstrom-scale enzyme movements. During his postdoctoral training at Harvard University, he co-developed MERFISH (Multiplexed Error-Robust Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization), a foundational technique for massively multiplexed single-molecule RNA imaging.
The Moffitt Laboratory specializes in spatial transcriptomics and single-molecule imaging technologies. Key research areas include:
- Development of genome-scale single-molecule imaging methods
- Mapping cellular biogeography in host-microbe interactions
- Spatial analysis of tissue remodeling in diseases like colitis and liver fibrosis
- Neural circuit mapping for chronic pain and brain development
Analysis of Dr. Moffitt's recent publications (2023-2025) reveals a dominant focus on advancing spatial transcriptomics technologies across diverse biological systems. His work bridges bacterial, intestinal, neural, and hepatic tissues, with significant contributions to computational spot detection, morphological curve projection, and microbiome-immunity interactions. The integration of MERFISH-based methods with deep learning for single-molecule analysis represents a major technical thrust, while applications span inflammatory bowel disease, neuropsychiatric disorders, and microbial ecology.
Dr. Moffitt leads the Moffitt Laboratory at Boston Children's Hospital, which combines expertise in physics, engineering, and biology to create molecular atlases of intact tissues. The lab's technologies enable precise cell-type identification, spatial localization of RNA molecules, and discovery of cellular interactions in complex biological environments.
