About
Jeffrey J. McDonnell is a distinguished Professor in the School of Environment and Sustainability at the University of Saskatchewan. He holds the title of Distinguished Professor and serves as Associate Director of the Global Institute for Water Security. His academic career spans over three decades, marked by groundbreaking contributions to hydrology, particularly in hillslope hydrology, isotope tracing, and ecohydrology. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, the American Geophysical Union, and the Royal Geographical Society. His research has been recognized with prestigious awards, including the Order of Canada and the IAHS-UNESCO-WMO International Hydrology Prize.
McDonnell's work integrates field experiments, modeling, and isotope analysis to understand water movement in landscapes. Key contributions include the 'fill-and-spill' runoff conceptualization and the Two Water Worlds hypothesis. He leads the McDonnell Hydrology Lab, focusing on hillslope runoff, isotopic analysis, and catchment processes. His mentorship has trained over 65 students and postdocs, many of whom hold leading academic and research roles globally.
He actively engages in international collaborations, including the Global Institute for Water Security and the MOST Lab. His publications span hydrological modeling, ecohydrology, and water policy, with over 300 peer-reviewed articles. Current projects include the CONCN modeling platform and studies on deep groundwater contributions to river systems.
