About
Dr. Jeffrey Lazarus is a researcher in global health and infectious disease policy at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal). He holds a PhD and advanced degrees in public health (MA, MIH). His expertise spans liver disease epidemiology, viral hepatitis elimination strategies, and HIV policy. He currently serves as Vice-Chairman of the EASL International Liver Foundation Board and participates in EU health initiatives like the European Commission’s Joint Action on infectious diseases.
Research interests focus on metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), policy interventions for alcohol-related liver diseases, and global health systems strengthening. He co-authored major reports including the Lancet HIV series on HIV outcomes and the EASL Liver Commission.
Recent work highlights include global analyses of MASLD prevalence, economic cost projections for metabolic liver diseases, and evaluations of hepatitis C treatment programs among marginalized populations. His articles emphasize policy solutions, such as best-buy interventions and equitable access to diagnostics.
Dr. Lazarus has held leadership roles at the WHO Europe (11 years) and Global Fund (3 years), and chaired AFEW International’s Board. His work bridges clinical hepatology with public health policy, addressing both disease pathogenesis and systemic health inequities.
