Jeffrey Hackney

Jeffrey Hackney has been a member of the University of Oxford's Faculty since 1964, serving as Fellow and Tutor in Law at St Edmund Hall and later at Wadham College. His academic career includes teaching Roman law across three colleges and researching legal history with a focus on Roman legal solutions to problems shared with early common law systems. He has held visiting professorships at North American universities and the Sorbonne.

He organized continuing education conferences for American judges through the National Judicial College and contributed to university administration, chairing committees like the Libraries Board. Co-founding the New Law Publishing Company, he pioneered same-day reporting of judicial decisions in property and commercial law.

His current research emphasizes Roman law's evolution and its intersections with contemporary legal frameworks. Despite transitioning away from broader legal domains, his work remains foundational in comparative historical legal studies.
