Jeffrey D Wayne

Jeffrey D. Wayne, MD, FACS, is a Professor of Surgery and Dermatology at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, serving as System Medical Director for Surgical Oncology and Associate Director for Clinical Operations at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center. He leads the Department of Surgery’s Cancer Committee and previously served as Chief of Staff at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. His academic roles include editorial board memberships for journals like the American Journal of Clinical Oncology and the Journal of Surgical Oncology.

Dr. Wayne’s education includes an MD from Boston University (1992), residency at the University of Chicago Hospitals (1999), and a Surgical Oncology fellowship at MD Anderson (2001). His research focuses on melanoma and soft tissue sarcoma treatment, emphasizing clinical trials, outcomes analysis, and quality improvement. He leads the DECIDE trial investigating DecisionDx-Melanoma’s impact on treatment decisions and outcomes.

His research interests extend to surgical outcomes, quality metrics, and translational medicine, with over 80 peer-reviewed publications. Notable achievements include pioneering minimally invasive inguinal lymph node dissection techniques and advocating for equity in cancer care through social vulnerability analyses. Awards include repeated Excellence in Teaching accolades (Hall of Fame, 2022) and Castle Connolly’s Top Doctor designation (2024).

Dr. Wayne chairs the Melanoma/Sarcoma Work Group for the Society of Surgical Oncology and serves on leadership committees for professional societies. He collaborates with industry on clinical trials for drugs like nirogacestat and explores genomic profiling’s role in guiding therapy. His multidisciplinary approach integrates surgical innovation, education, and advocacy for vulnerable patient populations.
