Jean-Michel Rabaté

Jean-Michel Rabaté is a Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of Pennsylvania, where he has taught since 1992. He is affiliated with the School of Arts & Sciences and the Department of English, with a focus on modernist literature, psychoanalysis, and critical theory.

His research spans 20th-century modernism, Joyce studies, Lacanian and Freudian psychoanalysis, and intersections between literature and philosophy. Recent publications explore Lacan's role as an 'irritant' in psychoanalysis, knots in post-Lacanian theory, and laughter's philosophical significance.

Rabaté has advised numerous doctoral students on topics ranging from modernist utopias to biotopias. He has served as past president of the Samuel Beckett Society and as a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 2008.
