Jean Michaud is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Laval University, where he has held positions since 2006. He previously served as an Assistant Professor (Lecturer equivalent) at the Centre for South-East Asian Studies, University of Hull (UK), from 1996 to 2002, and joined Université de Montréal as an Associate Researcher in 2002. His research focuses on the Southeast Asian Massif (Zomia), particularly examining the cultural, economic, and ideological adaptations of ethnic minority groups in northern Vietnam and southern Yunnan under socialist agendas and globalization.

- Interactions between ethnic minorities, the State, and market forces in Southeast Asia
- Long-term processes of cultural and economic adaptation
- Critical anthropology and anthropological history
- French colonial missionary and military ethnography
Collaborations: In collaboration with Dr. Sarah Turner (Geography, McGill University) and graduate students, he investigates how indigenous populations navigate livelihood imperatives and ideological shifts in socialist contexts.
