Jean-Luc Fournet is a French papyrologist and Byzantinist, currently serving as Professor at the Collège de France (chair: 'Culture écrite de l'Antiquité tardive et papyrologie byzantine'). He has held academic positions at the École pratique des hautes études (Directeur d'études, Section IV, Historical and Philological Sciences) and was a Chargé de recherche at CNRS.
His research focuses on Greek and Coptic papyrology, Late Antique and Byzantine Egypt, cultural history of written materials, and the transition from Greek to Coptic in Egyptian documentation. He has edited significant texts, including the Archiv für Papyrusforschung, and contributed to understanding the socio-linguistic dynamics of Late Antiquity.
Scientific distinctions include the CNRS Bronze Medal, Ambatielos Prize, and Lantier Prize. He actively participates in coptology and serves as vice-president of the Association francophone de coptologie.
