Jean-Francois ALLEMAND

Jean-Francois ALLEMAND serves as a Teacher-Researcher and Deputy Director of LPENS (Laboratoire de Physique de l'École Normale Supérieure) within the Department of Physics at École Normale Supérieure in Paris. His primary affiliation is with the Biophysics division where he leads Team 16: Multi-scale Physics of Living Organisms.

His research spans multiple biological scales using innovative experimental approaches. At the molecular level, his team employs magnetic tweezers to manipulate DNA and study nucleic acid physics. They investigate bacterial microcolony interactions, microalgae responses to abiotic stress, and utilize optogenetic techniques to model cancer development in zebrafish at the organism level. This multi-scale approach integrates molecular, cellular, and population-level phenomena to understand fundamental biophysical constraints.

Prof. ALLEMAND supervises six doctoral students and collaborates with permanent staff including Vincent Croquette and Nicolas Desprat. His laboratory operates from LPENS at 24 Rue Lhomond, Paris, maintaining active research programs in single-molecule biophysics and collective biological phenomena.
