Jean Chamberlain is a Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology at McMaster University's Faculty of Health Sciences and founder of the Save the Mothers initiative, which improves childbirth safety in Africa through advocacy and on-the-ground programs in Uganda since 1997.
Her research focuses on maternal health in low-resource settings, addressing maternal mortality, preterm birth interventions, and climate change impacts on maternal outcomes. She emphasizes cross-cultural competence in healthcare delivery and leadership training for health workers in developing countries through Save the Mothers.
Recent publications (2015-2022) demonstrate systematic reviews on preterm birth prevention, qualitative assessments of maternal healthcare access in Uganda, and policy advocacy for the Mother- and Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative, highlighting interdisciplinary approaches to global maternal health challenges.
Dr. Chamberlain's work with Save the Mothers has established sustainable partnerships with African institutions to train multidisciplinary healthcare leaders and implement community-based maternal health programs, directly impacting maternal healthcare systems across the continent.
