Jayne Hildebrand is an Assistant Professor of English at Barnard College specializing in nineteenth-century British literature. Her research encompasses Victorian novels, environmental humanities, and intersections of science and literature. She holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University (2018), M.A. from Concordia University (2010), and B.A. from the University of Winnipeg (2008).
Her research explores how Victorian writers engaged with scientific concepts through descriptive techniques, particularly examining environmental consciousness in fiction. She investigates literary representations of scientific discourse and spiritual transformations during periods of secularization.
Hildebrand teaches courses including First-Year Seminars on science fiction, Victorian Age literature, and critical writing. She's received the NAVSA Graduate Essay Prize and SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship for her scholarly work. She maintains professional affiliations with the North American Victorian Studies Association and Modern Language Association.
