University of Southern CaliforniaAbout
Jayakanth Ravichandran serves as Associate Professor in the Mork Family Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Southern California, holding the Philip and Cayley MacDonald Endowed Early Career Chair. He co-directs the Core Center for Excellence in Nano Imaging (CNI) and leads an active research group focused on advanced materials development.
His academic foundation includes graduate studies in Applied Science and Technology at UC Berkeley, followed by postdoctoral research in Physics at Columbia University and Harvard University.
Ravichandran's research centers on the rational design and synthesis of electronic and photonic materials, specializing in complex oxides and chalcogenides. His group pioneers artificial material structures like heterostructures and superlattices through methodologies inspired by alchemical principles, targeting thermodynamically stable natural materials and metastable artificial systems for energy and electronics applications. This work bridges fundamental physics with device engineering.
Recent publications (2022-2023) reveal strong thematic continuity in charge-density-wave phenomena, optical anisotropy, and advanced synthesis techniques. His team consistently publishes in high-impact journals like Advanced Materials and ACS Applied Electronic Materials, demonstrating expertise in both fundamental material behavior and practical device implementation.
Ravichandran holds the prestigious Philip and Cayley MacDonald Endowed Early Career Chair, recognizing his research trajectory. No additional personal scientific awards are documented in the provided materials.
He actively mentors nine graduate students including recent PhD graduate Yang (third from his lab), qualifying exam passers Boyang and Mythili, and new members Claire and Raymond. Student achievements include Vincent's Viterbi CURVE Fellowship and Provost’s Undergraduate Fellowships for Miranda and Vincent. Research is supported by an active MURI grant, evidenced by the 2022 annual review.
The laboratory occupies Vivian Hall of Engineering (Rooms 705, 713, 719) with dedicated facilities for materials synthesis and characterization, enabling the group's innovative work on ternary/quaternary compounds and artificial material architectures.
