Jay Sau
Professor · Topological Condensed Matter Physics
University of Maryland, College ParkAbout
Jay Sau is a Professor of Physics and Co-Director of the Joint Quantum Institute (JQI) at the University of Maryland. He holds a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley (2008). His research focuses on topological condensed matter physics, quantum many-body systems, and Majorana fermions for quantum information processing. He is affiliated with the Condensed Matter Theory Center (CMTC) and has pioneered work on topological superconductivity in semiconductor-superconductor hybrids.
Key roles include Co-Director of JQI and Fellow at CMTC. Research interests emphasize applying topological principles to create protected quantum systems. Awards include NSF CAREER Award (2016) and Sloan Fellowship (2016). Advises four graduate students and collaborates on quantum computing platforms.
Publications span topological superconductors, Majorana modes, and Weyl semimetals. Current projects investigate disorder effects in Majorana nanowires and machine learning for topological material design.
