Jay Prosser

Professor Jay Prosser is a Professor of Humanities at the University of Leeds, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures and the School of English. He holds a PhD from the City University of New York Graduate School and is a Fulbright Scholar. His research spans gender studies, Jewish studies, photography theory, and memoir写作. Key works include Second Skins: The Body Narratives of Transsexuality (1998) and Loving Strangers: A Camphorwood Chest, a Legacy, a Son Returns (2024), the latter winning the Hazel Rowley Prize.

Prosser leads international research initiatives such as the Ottoman Pasts, Present Cities project and has collaborated with Amnesty International. He explores transcultural memories, diaspora narratives, and the intersection of art with historical trauma. His teaching focuses on creative nonfiction and critical theory, including modules like Telling Lives: Reading and Writing Family Memoir.

His awards include recognition for both academic and creative works. Prosser also engages in public scholarship through The Conversation, addressing topics like trans rights, family history, and cultural heritage.
