Javier Rey-Maquieira Palmer

Dr. Javier Rey-Maquieira Palmer is a Full Professor at the Department of Applied Economics within the Faculty of Economics at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB). His academic career spans two distinct periods: an initial phase marked by administrative roles (including Dean of the Faculty of Economics) from 2002–2009, followed by a dedicated focus on research and teaching in Tourism Economics since 2009. His work emphasizes the competitiveness of tourism destinations, integrating diverse subfields such as environmental economics, labor markets, and experiential tourism.

• Principal Investigator of the COMET research group (Competitiveness, Environment, and Tourism)
• Co-founder of the International Association of Tourism Economics (IATE)
• Co-founder of the spin-off Imagine Tourism Consulting
• Recipient of the Research Excellence Grant (2011) and a Quality Award for the international PhD Master in Tourism Economics

He has supervised over 10 doctoral theses internationally and participated in 4 competitive projects on tourism competitiveness. His teaching includes courses in International Economics, Economic Context, and Final Degree Projects for Economics and Tourism degrees.
