Javier Paz Valbuena

Javier Paz Valbuena is a Departmental Lecturer in Law & Finance at the Faculty of Law, University of Oxford, and a doctoral researcher under the supervision of Prof Horst Eidenmüller. He contributes to teaching modules such as Corporate Finance Law, Principles of Financial Regulation, and Law & Economics of Corporate Transactions, and serves as Research Assistant for the Oxford Digital Assets Project.

Javi’s research explores government intervention in corporate distress, focusing on bailouts and their wealth transfer implications for stakeholders like taxpayers and society. His work bridges legal and macroeconomic analyses, examining regulatory frameworks for financial distress resolution and systemic firm bailouts.

Javi’s publications center on corporate bailouts, insolvency law, and financial regulation. He analyzes wealth redistribution in real-world cases (Siemens Gamesa, Credit Suisse) and proposes theoretical guidelines for equitable interventions during crises. His work engages with comparative law, tax policy, and macroeconomic impacts of legal decisions.

At Oxford, Javi collaborates with research groups including the Private Law Research Group and Public Law in Oxford. He is currently involved in projects analyzing bailouts of critical firms like Thames Water and British Steel, extending his framework for principled government interventions.
