Dr. Javier Letran is a Senior Lecturer in Spanish at the University of St Andrews, based in the School of Modern Languages. His research focuses on 20th and 21st-century Peninsular Spanish literature, particularly poetry, with emphasis on authors like Luis Alberto de Cuenca and Miguel d’Ors. He explores themes such as literary responses to neoliberalism, ideology, and cultural memory.
Education: Licenciado in Hispanic Philology and English Philology from the Universidad de Granada, a PGCE from the same institution, and a PhD from the University of Birmingham.
Research interests include modern Spanish poetry, literature’s engagement with democracy, ethics, and philosophy. Current projects involve reconstructing a forbidden 1966 homage to Antonio Machado and analyzing Miguel d’Ors’ poetic aesthetics.
Teaching includes core undergraduate/postgraduate modules and specialized courses on post-1975 Spanish literature and post-war subversion. His work has been recognized with the 2019 Teaching Excellence Award in Arts & Divinity.
Publications span peer-reviewed articles, book reviews, and edited volumes, addressing topics from Francoist cultural suppression to intertextual connections between Spanish and American poets.
Supervision and grants: Leads the 'Writing across Genres' project (2010) on Juan Bonilla’s poetry. Active in academic networks, including the Centre for Poetic Innovation, and frequently presents at international conferences and cultural events.
