Jasper Heinzen

Jasper Heinzen is Senior Lecturer in Modern History at the University of York. Educated at Otago, Canterbury, and Cambridge (MPhil, PhD), he specializes in 19th-century Germany, prisoners of war, and monarchy. His research challenges conventional narratives about warfare ethics across Enlightenment and modern periods.

Monographs include cultural histories of Prussian state-building and wartime honor systems, arguing for continuity in captivity debates despite industrialization and nationalism. Current projects examine royal humanitarianism during WWI and a history of early 19th-century German lands.

Honored with Royal Historical Society's Alexander Prize and Lower Saxon History Prize, his work has been funded by AHRC, Leverhulme Trust, and EU Marie Curie Actions. Previously taught at University of Bern as Marie Curie Fellow.
