Jason Varuhas

Professor Jason Varuhas holds the position of Professor of Law at the University of Melbourne's Melbourne Law School. Currently serving as Senior Crown Counsel at the New Zealand Crown Law Office, he provides expert advice and representation on constitutional and human rights matters.

His scholarship spans administrative law, human rights, constitutional law, tort law, remedies, and public-private law intersections. Varuhas founded the biennial Public Law Conference series and serves as Senior Research Fellow at the New Zealand Centre for Public Law.

Significant publications include the award-winning monograph 'Damages and Human Rights' (2016), the co-authored treatise 'Administrative Law' (Oxford, 5th ed), and contributions to 'McGregor on Damages' and 'Balkin and Davis The Law of Torts'. His research has influenced superior courts across Australia, New Zealand, and the UK, contributing to landmark decisions including the High Court of Australia and UK Supreme Court.

Varuhas has directed the Centre for Comparative Constitutional Studies (2021-2023) and teaches Law and Public Administration. His recent scholarship examines declarations of inconsistency, principles of legality, and the interdependence of substance and process in judicial review.
