Jason Stanley

Jason Stanley is the Bissell-Heyd Chair in American Studies at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy and holds a joint appointment in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Toronto. His academic career includes professorships at Yale University (2013-2025), Rutgers University (2004-2013), the University of Michigan (2000-2004), and Cornell University (1995-2000). He is also a Distinguished Professor at the Kyiv School of Economics.

Stanley’s research spans philosophy of language, epistemology, linguistics, cognitive science, and social/political philosophy. His work emphasizes contextual constraints on meaning and explores themes like propaganda, authoritarianism, free speech, and democracy. His influential books include How Propaganda Works (2015) and How Fascism Works (2018), both translated globally.
