Jason Lyall is the inaugural James Wright Chair in Transnational Studies and Associate Professor in the Government Department at Dartmouth College. He directs the Political Violence FieldLab at the John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding and is affiliated with Quantitative Social Science (QSS). His research focuses on the effects and effectiveness of political violence in civil and conventional wars. Lyall holds a B.A. from Simon Fraser University and a Ph.D. from Cornell University.
His current projects include writing a book on lessons from the American war in Afghanistan (under contract with Princeton University Press), a Carnegie-funded study on improving humanitarian assistance in conflict zones like Afghanistan, Syria, and Yemen, and an investigation into the intersection of inequality, racism, and intergroup relations in violent contexts within institutions such as police forces and rebel organizations.
Lyall’s expertise spans international security, political violence, and research ethics in conflict settings. He has no listed scientific awards but has secured funding for his work through Carnegie and Princeton University Press. His office is located in Silsby Hall, Room 229.
