Jason L. Schwartz

Jason L. Schwartz is an Associate Professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Yale School of Public Health, with secondary appointments in the History of Medicine and the Institution for Social and Policy Studies. He holds a PhD in History and Sociology of Science and an MBE in Bioethics from the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on vaccines and vaccination policy, medical regulation, and the role of scientific expert advice in public health decision-making. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he advised Connecticut’s Vaccine Advisory Group and provided guidance to educational institutions on vaccine policies.

Education: AB in Classics (Princeton University), PhD in History and Sociology of Science (University of Pennsylvania), MBE in Bioethics (University of Pennsylvania).

Research interests include vaccine policy, regulatory science, health equity, and the historical evolution of expert advisory committees. His current projects include a book on the role of expert committees in American medicine and a NIH-funded study on vaccination mandates and policy responses to medical interventions.

Publications span high-impact journals like The Lancet, JAMA, and The New England Journal of Medicine, addressing topics such as vaccine hesitancy, pandemic response, and FDA regulatory practices. He is also author of Vaccination Ethics and Policy and a chapter in Plotkin's Vaccines on ethics.

Awards and roles include Fellow of The Hastings Center, member of The Lancet Commission on Vaccine Acceptance, and advisor to the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review. His work bridges academic research with public policy, emphasizing evidence-based approaches to healthcare challenges.
