Jason Hill is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art History at the University of Delaware, affiliated with the College of Arts & Sciences. His research examines modern and contemporary art, focusing on the intersections of photography, media, and mass journalism in American cultural history. He is currently writing a book exploring the technological and cultural links between lens-based news media and U.S. police systems since the 1930s.
Hill holds a Ph.D. in Art History (2011) from the University of Southern California, where he also earned a Visual Studies Graduate Certificate. He completed an M.A. in Art History at Tufts University (2004) and a B.A. in Political Science at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (2001), with prior studies in painting at Mass Art. Before joining UD in 2015, he held fellowships at the New-York Historical Society (2014–15) and the Institut National d'Histoire de l'Art in Paris (2011–13), and taught at institutions including the École Normale Supérieure and UNLV.
His research interests center on the visual culture of news media, including projects like Artist as Reporter: Weegee, Ad Reinhardt, and the PM News Picture (2018) and co-editing Getting the Picture: The Visual Culture of the News (2015). His work critiques journalistic objectivity and explores media's role in combating fascism and shaping cultural narratives.
Recent accolades include a 2025 Ailsa Mellon Bruce Senior Fellowship at the National Gallery of Art and a 2024 Getty Scholarship. His publications span photography’s sociopolitical dimensions, media-technology intersections, and the historical dynamics between art and journalism.
