Jason Carbine is Professor of Religious Studies at Whittier College, specializing in Theravāda Buddhism across South/Southeast Asia. His ethnographic and historical research focuses on ritual practices in Sri Lanka and Myanmar, with emerging work in Southwest China.
His scholarship analyzes monastic boundary (sīmā) rituals, Buddhist legal traditions, and religious emotion. Current projects include translating the Kalyāṇī Inscriptions and co-editing 'The Myanmar Reader.'
He teaches courses on Asian religions, globalization, environmental ethics, and method/theory in religious studies. Fieldwork integrates textual analysis with ethnographic observation to study contemporary ritual adaptations.
