Jason C. Hurlbert is a Professor of Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry, Physics and Geology within the College of Arts and Sciences at Winthrop University. He holds a Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. in Microbiology and Cell Science from the University of Florida. His office is located in Sims Science Building 301B.
Dr. Hurlbert's research focuses on structural biology, biochemistry, and biophysics, with particular emphasis on studying protein structure/function relationships. His laboratory employs a variety of techniques spanning molecular biology, biochemistry, and biophysics to investigate proteins in bacterial systems, including cloning, expression, purification, characterization, and crystallization.
His current research projects include Structure and Function Studies of Human Sphingosine Kinases 1 & 2, and Crystallographic Analysis of Xylanase C from Bacillus subtilis. These projects have significant implications for understanding cancer mechanisms and developing biofuels from lignocellulosic biomass.
Dr. Hurlbert teaches multiple courses including General Chemistry I & II, Biochemistry II, Biochemistry Laboratory Techniques, Current Topics in Biochemical Sciences, Protein Structure and Function, and Mass Spectrometry. His teaching philosophy emphasizes the importance of understanding chemical principles in biological systems and preparing students for advanced studies or careers in science.
