About
Jason Barrett serves as Associate Professor in the College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Communication Arts and Sciences at Lawrence Technological University, where he teaches core American history and political tradition courses including U.S. History to 1877 and American Constitutional Law. Recognized with the 2010 Mary E. and Richard E. Marburger Faculty Member of the Year Award, he maintains active engagement through advising the Disc Golf Club and Quest Advisor for Open Mic Night.
His educational foundation includes a Doctor of Philosophy in History from the University of Michigan (2006), Master of Arts in History from the University of Virginia (1994), and Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Michigan (1993). These credentials underpin his specialized research in early American political economy.
Barrett's scholarship critically examines the origins of American liberalism through the intersection of democracy and capitalism during the Founding era. His work investigates how legal institutions adapted to revolutionary ideology, particularly regarding property rights, contracts, and corporate structures in Jeffersonian Virginia. This focus manifests in publications spanning loyalist historiography, constitutional conventions, and agrarian political economy, revealing persistent themes of race, honor, and economic transition in early republic development.
His publication trajectory from 1994-2011 demonstrates evolving concentration on Virginia's legal-economic landscape, with increasing emphasis on slavery's relationship to market systems and suffrage movements. The 2010 humanities education article represents a methodological expansion while maintaining historical rigor.
Barrett's accolades include dual 2006 Distinguished Dissertation Awards from the University of Michigan, Mellon Doctoral Fellowships, and research support from the Huntington Library and Virginia Historical Society. His grant history features multiple Rackham Graduate School dissertation writing awards (1998-2001) and the Keck Foundation Research Fellowship.
Current academic service includes revising his dissertation manuscript for publication while mentoring students through course instruction and campus activities, with ongoing research into Jeffersonian political economy and constitutional development.
