Research Focus
Dr. Mitchell's scholarship critically examines transnational constructions of mixed blackness, gender, and national identity within U.S. and Brazilian public spheres. Her forthcoming book, Imagining the Mulatta: Blackness in U.S. and Brazilian Media (University of Illinois Press), analyzes how media representations of mixed Black women function as contested sites where narratives of multiracial progress coexist with systemic anti-Blackness. Her work spans diverse platforms including television, celebrity culture, and sports media to illuminate how these representations shape cross-national discourse on race and identity.
