About
Jaqueline Sturm serves as a Research Fellow at the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies (PIIRS), Princeton University, following her 2018 Ph.D. in Art and Archaeology. Her doctoral research examined early medieval episcopal complexes in Northern Italy (A.D. 300–600), analyzing cathedral-baptistery-episcopium ensembles as expressions of religious authority. She holds an M.A. in history and Christian archaeology from Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (2009).
Her scholarly focus centers on Mediterranean art and architecture across the Late Antique and Early Medieval transitions, with specialized attention to Christian art's emergence from Late Roman traditions. She investigates how bishops materialized spiritual and political authority through architectural programming, particularly in ecclesiastical complexes that reflected evolving episcopal power structures during Christianity's institutionalization.
Sturm actively contributes to international discourse through presentations at the International Congress on Medieval Studies (Kalamazoo) and Princeton's Medieval Studies Graduate Student Conference. She co-organized Princeton's 2011 conference 'Drawing a Blank: Past and Presence' and participated in interdisciplinary workshops at Oxford, Paris, Zurich, and Auckland Castle's bishop-focused conference.
Her research excellence is recognized through the Princeton Fellowship at Rome's Bibliotheca Hertziana (2012–2014) and subsequent Regular Fellowship with the Max Planck Society (through 2015), supporting her dissertation fieldwork and scholarly development in Late Antique art historical studies.
