Janina Selzer is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Sociology at Hamilton College, NY. Her research focuses on the intersection of race, immigration, and gender in urban contexts, particularly how inequalities are spatially inscribed and contested. She holds a Ph.D. from the Graduate Center, CUNY (2023), with prior degrees from the University of Cambridge and University of Chicago. Her work has been published in Ethnic and Racial Studies and metropolitics.
Key research projects include BE:LONGING (under contract with NYU Press), a comparative study of Iraqi refugees in Bielefeld, Germany, and Detroit, Michigan, and analyses of anti-refugee discourses in Germany post-2015. She has received prestigious fellowships, including the Manfred-Rommel-Stipendium and Carell Dissertation Fellowship.
Teaching experience includes courses at Hunter College, CUNY, emphasizing New York City as an urban laboratory. Beyond academia, Selzer uses photography and creative writing to advocate for social justice.
