She holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Duke University (1972), an M.A. in Economics from Duke (1971), and a B.A. in Economics from the University of Denver (1969). Key areas include discrimination, spatial immobility, and income inequality in urban contexts.
Her work explores how discrimination impacts labor market outcomes, including the effects of co-worker discrimination on team-based productivity and the role of government policies in addressing disparities. She has also analyzed spatial mobility, emphasizing the dual roles of commuting and residential choices in shaping labor market access. Additionally, her research on urban inequality examines household formation patterns and local labor market conditions as drivers of income distribution shifts.
Current projects include investigating gender pay gaps among stockbrokers and comparing wage disparities between heterosexual and LGBTQ+ populations. Madden’s affiliations include the Population Studies Center and her personal webpage, which hosts further research materials.
