Janet Melnick is a Teaching Professor in the Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) department at Pennsylvania State University's Scranton campus. She also serves as the Academic Adviser for the HDFS online Master of Social Work program at Penn State's World Campus. With over two decades of experience since joining Penn State in 2000, her teaching focuses on gerontology and internship components of the curriculum.

Mentoring in clinical practice and academia, Melnick has led three major research grants from the Center for Rural PA, specializing in rural home and community-based services for the elderly. She was an original supervisor of the Protective Service Unit for the Lackawanna County Area Agency on Aging and directed rehabilitation services for Telespond Senior Services.
She has received recognition for her work as a grantee and consultant for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's dementia care and caregiving programs. Her career spans 15 years of clinical practice and administration with eldercare agencies prior to academia.
