About
Dr. Janet A. W. Elliott is a University of Alberta Distinguished Professor and Canada Research Chair in Thermodynamics in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering. She also holds an Adjunct Professor appointment in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology. She earned her MASc and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Toronto and has previously been a Visiting Professor at MIT and the University of Oxford.
Dr. Elliott’s research spans Thermodynamics, Surfaces and Interfaces, Transport, and Cryobiology, with a focus on fundamental concepts in Gibbsian thermodynamics, colloid and surface phenomena, and cryopreservation of biological systems. Her work integrates theoretical and experimental approaches to address challenges in nanoscale science, phase change processes, and biomedical applications.
She has received numerous accolades, including fellowships in the Royal Society of Canada (2022), the Canadian Academy of Engineering (2023), and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (2019). Awards include the American Chemical Society Langmuir Lectureship (2022) and the Basile J. Luyet Medal from the Society for Cryobiology (2018).
- Editor-in-Chief of Cryobiology
- Editorial Board member for Langmuir and Advances in Colloid and Interface Science
- Previous service on the Physical Sciences Advisory Committee for the Canadian Space Agency
