Professor Jane Ginsborg is the Associate Director of Research and Programme Leader for Research Degrees at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM). She holds a dual background in music and psychology, with a PhD from Keele University. Her research focuses on music performance psychology, musicians' health, and aging in musical professions. She leads the Centre for Music Performance Research and serves as Editor-in-Chief of Musicae Scientiae.
Educated at the University of York (Music), Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and the Open University (Psychology), she has held roles at the University of Manchester, Leeds Metropolitan University, and Sheffield University. Her AHRC-funded projects include initiatives on hearing-impaired musicians and healthy practice for musicians, recognized nationally and internationally.
Her research areas include cognitive processes in performance, memorization strategies, and musicians' health literacy. She has supervised over 10 PhD students, focusing on topics like health education in music training and gender dynamics in brass playing. Awards include the Van Lawrence Award (2002) and recognition for her work on musicians' health projects.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on music psychology, health in performance, and research methodologies. She regularly delivers keynotes globally and reviews for top journals. Current projects explore aging musicians' transitions and health literacy assessment tools for performers.
