Jane Carlton is a Bloomberg Distinguished Professor at Johns Hopkins University, holding joint appointments in the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology (Bloomberg School of Public Health) and the Department of Biomedical Engineering (Whiting School of Engineering). She leads the Malaria Research Institute and directs the Carlton Lab, focusing on comparative and integrative genomics to study parasites causing global health diseases like malaria. Her work bridges evolutionary biology, public health, and genomic technology, with a focus on understanding parasite biology to improve diagnostics, surveillance, and control strategies.
Carlton earned her PhD in Genetics from the University of Edinburgh (1995). Her career includes roles at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) and New York University, where she previously led the Center for the Study of Complex Malaria in India. She has published over 160 articles and received prestigious awards, including the Honorary Fellowship from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (2024).
Research Interests:
- Comparative genomics of malaria parasites (Plasmodium spp.) and Trichomonas vaginalis
- Genetic epidemiology of malaria drug resistance
- Urban microbiome studies in New York City
- Evolutionary mechanisms driving parasite adaptation
Awards & Recognition:
- Stoll-Stunkard Memorial Award (2010)
- Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2012)
- Bloomberg Distinguished Professor Title (2024)
Grants & Collaborations: Leads NIH-funded International Centers of Excellence for Malaria Research in India, integrating genomic surveillance with field epidemiology. Collaborates with global health institutions like the WHO and local Indian partners.
