Jane Apperley

Professor Jane Apperley is a Professor of Haemato-oncology at Imperial College London, affiliated with the Department of Immunology and Inflammation within the Faculty of Medicine. She currently serves as the Campus Director for the Hammersmith-White City Campus (since 2022). Previously, she held roles as Clinical Director for Clinical Haematology at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and Chair of the Centre for Haematology at Imperial College (until 2021). Her affiliations include the Centre for Advanced Therapeutics, Centre for Haematology, and Imperial Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre.

Education:

• MBChB (Medicine), University of Birmingham (1974–1979)
• MD in Haematology, University of Birmingham (1988)
• Postdoctoral Fellowships: Royal College of Physicians (MRCP, 1992), Royal College of Pathologists (MRCPath, 1991; FRCPath, 1999), and a Wellcome Junior Fellowship (1987–1989) in gene therapy at the Children’s Hospital, Boston, USA.

Research Interests: Focus on chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML), stem cell transplantation (SCT), and tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). Her work addresses molecular monitoring, drug resistance, and fertility/pregnancy outcomes in haematological diseases. She leads the next iteration of ELN CML Consensus Guidelines (expected 2024). Additional areas include gene therapy and public health implications of haematological treatments.

Leadership & Grants: International roles include presidencies of the British/European Societies for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (BSBMT/EBMT), and chair of the European Research Council’s ‘Starting Investigators’ program. Her work spans multidisciplinary teams in clinical and translational research.
