Jana Ries

Jana Ries is a Lecturer and Faculty Director of Postgraduate Research at the University of Portsmouth's Faculty of Business & Law. She holds a PhD in Mathematics from the same institution and has conducted postdoctoral research on EU-funded projects LOGMAN and SEABILLA. Her work focuses on algorithmic design for combinatorial optimization, fuzzy logic applications in uncertain environments, and sustainable transport logistics. She collaborates with industries in defense, maritime logistics, and food supply chains. Ries is actively involved in research centers including the Agile Centre For Equitable Sustainability and the Centre for Operational Research & Logistics. She supervises PhD students and has contributed to 15 publications since 2017.

Research Interests: Her research integrates fuzzy logic with operational efficiency in supply chains, emphasizing dynamic decision support systems for transport logistics. Key areas include carbon pricing strategies, fleet management, and green logistics aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals. She explores algorithmic solutions for real-time optimization challenges in maritime logistics and manufacturing.

Projects: She leads/co-leads projects like SEA CHANGE (air quality improvements in coastal harbors) and SHAPE UK (hydrogen-based port ecosystems). Recent collaborations include workshops on clean maritime practices and participation in COP28 events.

Advising & Grants: Supervises 8 theses and secured funding through EU Framework Programmes and institutional grants. Her training initiatives include assessing teaching methodologies for postgraduate OR education in Europe.

Labs/Teams: Active in the Women in Operational Research and Analytics Network (WORAN) and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams across engineering and environmental science disciplines.
