Jan van der Putten is Professor of Indonesian and Malay Studies at the University of Hamburg's Faculty of Humanities. He leads the DREAMSEA project preserving endangered Southeast Asian manuscripts and contributes to the Cluster of Excellence 'Understanding Written Artefacts'. His research analyzes Malay literary traditions, manuscript economies, and colonial linguistic interactions.
Publications examine Jawi script standardization, 19th-century manuscript production, and language guides from Dutch colonial contexts. His work integrates philological analysis with cultural history to reconstruct knowledge transmission networks in maritime Southeast Asia.
