Jan Youtie

Jan L. Youtie is an Affiliate-LongTerm Research/Collaboration Member at the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter School of Public Policy at Georgia Tech, where she directs the Technology Policy Assessment Center. She also serves as Director of Policy Research Services and Principal Research Associate in the Economic Development Lab (Enterprise Innovation Institute). Her roles include coordinating social and ethical implications research for the Southeastern Nanotechnology Infrastructure Corridor (SENIC). Dr. Youtie holds a PhD in Political Science from Emory University (1981), alongside MA (1979) and BS (1977) degrees from the same institution.

Her research focuses on technology-based economic development, advanced manufacturing, emerging technology assessment, and innovation evaluation. She has led studies for agencies like NSF, EU Commission, and the U.S. Department of Commerce. Notable contributions include work on nanotechnology policy, synthetic biology governance, and interdisciplinary research dynamics. Awards include the Lang Rosen Gold Award for best Journal of Technology Transfer article and recognition as a top innovation management researcher.

Teaching spans courses in policy task forces, economic development, and innovation geography. Her work emphasizes bibliometric/patent analysis methodologies and their application to policy evaluation. She contributes to initiatives like the National Nanotechnology Initiative and advises on responsible innovation frameworks.
