Jan Schubert is a Researcher in the Department of History at the European University Institute, having joined as part of the 2024 cohort. A German national, he contributes to the institution's research community focused on historical studies.

Currently working on his thesis titled "An Oral History of Algerian Labour Migration to the GDR 1974-1984 – How Labour Migrants' Agencies deal with (Socialist) Coloniality and the Marginalization of their Masculinity," Schubert examines the intersection of migration, postcolonial theory, and gender within Cold War-era East Germany. His work is supervised by Benno Bastian, Gammerl with M'hamed, Oualdi serving as second reader.
As a researcher at one of Europe's premier social science institutions, Schubert's work contributes to understanding less-examined migration patterns within socialist states during the 20th century.
