Jan Rouwendal

Jan Rouwendal is a Full Professor of Spatial Economics at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam's School of Business and Economics, and a research fellow at Tinbergen Institute and Amsterdam School of Real Estate. He holds a PhD from VU Amsterdam (1988) and a master's from Erasmus University Rotterdam (1983). His work focuses on urban economics, real estate markets, cultural heritage analysis, and spatial policy impacts. Recent projects include constructing commercial real estate price indices and analyzing urban labor market dynamics.

Teaching spans undergraduate courses like Real Estate and Urban Planning, and master's modules such as Regional and Urban Economics. He coordinates the Real Estate Economics and Finance minor program.

Research emphasizes spatial aspects of property markets and cultural heritage's economic role. Notable studies include the impact of heritage redevelopment on housing prices and the rebound effect in transportation energy use. He has been awarded the Best Paper Award (2008) and led grants like the Netspar project on home equity and long-term care.
