Jan Maly

Jan Maly serves as an Assistant Professor at the Institute for Data, Process and Knowledge Management at Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU Wien), where he is affiliated with the Department of Information Systems and Operations Management. His academic position places him within WU's research and teaching structure focused on information systems and management.

Dr. Maly's research expertise centers on Computational Social Choice (COMSOC), Logic, and Knowledge Representation. He specializes in developing computational tools that enhance decision-making processes for both individuals and groups. His current research explores non-standard voting frameworks including Participatory Budgeting and Perpetual Voting, with particular attention to preference representation mechanisms and computational complexity questions that arise in these domains. He approaches these topics with a practical orientation toward improving democratic processes and collective decision systems.

Dr. Maly was awarded the prestigious Erwin Schrödinger Fellowship by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) for his research project "A holistic analysis of participatory budgeting," which examined budgeting processes not as isolated voting events but as multi-year, city-wide processes comprising multiple interconnected stages.

From September 2021 to April 2023, Dr. Maly conducted research at the University of Amsterdam as a member of the COMSOC Group led by Professor Ulle Endriss. He continued this research trajectory from May 2023 to May 2024 at TU Wien as a member of the DBAI research group.

Beyond his academic research, Dr. Maly co-founded the European Digital Democracy network, which connects academics and practitioners working on digital democracy initiatives. This reflects his commitment to bridging theoretical research with practical applications in democratic innovation.
