Jan Gugenheimer is an Assistant Professor (W2 TT) at TU Darmstadt, heading the Human-Computer Interaction group. Previously, he held positions at Institut Polytechnique de Paris (Télécom Paris) and completed his PhD at Ulm University in 2019. His research focuses on Mobile/Nomadic Virtual Reality (VR), exploring challenges and opportunities in ubiquitous mixed reality contexts. He has conducted research at MIT Media Lab and Microsoft Research, and his work bridges HCI, VR/AR, and context-aware computing.
Education: PhD (Ulm University, 2019), MSc (Ulm University, 2013), BSc (Ulm University, 2011). Visiting studies at Hawaii Pacific University (2012).
Research Interests: VR/AR Interaction Design, Nomadic Computing, Context-Aware Systems, and Security in Mobile Environments. Notable projects include FaceTouch, GyroVR, and ShareVR, addressing touch interaction, inertia simulation, and co-located VR experiences.
Teaching: Courses on User Interface Software, Media Informatics, and HCI. Supervised over 20 thesis projects, including studies on VR collaboration, security, and assistive technology.
Awards: Best Paper Honorable Mention (CHI 2020), Best Paper Award (CHI 2017, DIS 2018). Active in conference organization (e.g., CHI, UIST) and reviewing across top venues.
