Jamie Carter

Dr. Jamie Carter is an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at Brighton and Sussex Medical School and a Consultant Paediatrician in the NHS with 19 years of clinical experience. He serves as Sussex's Designated Doctor for Safeguarding and Designated Paediatrician for Child Deaths, specializing in child protection, forensic paediatrics, and neurodevelopmental disorders including Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). His expertise encompasses abusive head trauma, child sexual abuse, developmental trauma, and forensic medical examination, with specific experience acting as an expert witness for sexual abuse cases involving boys.

Dr. Carter holds an MBBS, BSc, and Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (DTM&H), and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (FRCPCH). Previously, he served as Assistant Child Protection Officer for the RCPCH until December 2018, developing national safeguarding curricula and courses including the Forensic Sexual Assault Best Practice training.

His research focuses on translating clinical practice into evidence-based guidelines for child protection. Key contributions include the 2021 RCPCH Working Group guidance on Fabricated or Induced Illness, the 2020 'Opening doors' publication in Archives of Disease in Childhood for professionals supporting children disclosing abuse, and international consensus statements on physical abuse screening. These works demonstrate his commitment to improving multi-agency responses to child abuse through practical, accessible resources that bridge clinical practice and policy development.
