James Étienne Viator

James Étienne Viator is the Adams & Reese Distinguished Professor of Law at the College of Law, Loyola University New Orleans. He has been tenured since 1991 and promoted to full professor before being invested as the first Adams & Reese Distinguished Professor of Law in 2002. His roles include faculty advisor for the Loyola Law Review and Loyola Journal of Public Interest Law.

Viator's research spans criminal law and procedure, torts, contracts, property, Louisiana legal history, and American constitutional history. His work often intersects with interdisciplinary analysis of legal systems and historical contexts.

He has been recognized multiple times by the Loyola Student Bar Association as the 'Best Professor' and serves as a founding director of the Louisiana Supreme Court Historical Society.
