James Weidman is an Assistant Professor of Jazz Piano and African American Studies at the University of Georgia's Hugh Hodgson School of Music. A versatile pianist, composer, and arranger, he has collaborated with iconic artists such as Abbey Lincoln, Steve Coleman, and Joe Lovano, while emerging as a bandleader in his own right.
Weidman leads multiple ensembles, including The Aperturistic Trio (exploring original compositions), The Rhythm Keepers (swinging jazz standards), and Spiritual Impressions (interpreting 19th-century Black Spirituals). His career spans decades of sideman work with legends like Max Roach and Randy Weston, and his father, James Weidman Sr., instilled foundational jazz principles early in his development.
Education: Began piano at 7, graduated cum laude from Youngstown State University in 1976 with a degree in classical piano and music education. Current affiliations: Hugh Hodgson School of Music (University of Georgia), Ramsey Hall performances, and Ebenezer Baptist Church collaborations.
