James Syler serves as Assistant Professor of Practice in Composition at the University of Texas at San Antonio's College of Liberal and Fine Arts, where he has been on faculty since 2001. He also teaches composition at the University of the Incarnate Word and San Antonio College, demonstrating his deep commitment to music education across multiple institutions in the San Antonio area.
Dr. Syler earned his B.M. from Northern Illinois University and M.M. from the University of Miami, with additional studies at the University of Texas at Austin. His compositional training included private studies with Alfred Reed, Karl Korte, and Pulitzer Prize-winner Michael Colgrass, which significantly shaped his artistic development.
Syler's compositional work spans multiple genres and styles, reflecting his eclectic approach that bridges traditional and contemporary techniques. His music demonstrates strong structural foundations, rhythmic energy, lyricism, and harmonic color, all aimed at communicating profound expressions of 'the good, the true, and the beautiful.'
