James Spotila

James A. Spotila is a Professor of Geology at Virginia Tech's Department of Geosciences, College of Science. His research focuses on active tectonics and geomorphology, particularly continental deformation systems, glacial erosion, and passive margin evolution. He employs thermochronometry, cosmogenic dating, and field observations to study landscape evolution and tectonic processes. Spotila has advised numerous graduate students and teaches courses like Physical Geology and Advanced Geomorphology.

Education: Ph.D. (Caltech, 1998), M.S. (Caltech, 1995), B.S. (Boston College, 1992). He has contributed to over 80 publications, including works on the San Andreas Fault, St. Elias Orogen, and Appalachian Mountains. Current roles include Editor of GEOLOGY, Faculty Senate President, and positions on university committees.
