About
James Raymo serves as the Henry Wendt III ’55 Professor of East Asian Studies and Director of the Princeton-University of Tokyo Strategic Partnership Office at Princeton University, where his research centers on demographic transformations in Japan with implications for East Asian societies.
His work spans marriage timing, divorce, fertility dynamics, women's health, single-mother households, living arrangements, social inequality, and aging populations. Current projects examine (1) socioeconomic determinants of children's well-being across East Asia; (2) demographic parallels between East Asia and Southern Europe through lenses of gender inequality and life-course instability; and (3) intergenerational support systems for unmarried mothers in Japan. He chairs an International Union for the Scientific Study of Population scientific panel on comparative demography.
Raymo holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Michigan (2000) and maintains active collaborations with researchers in China, Korea, and Japan.
